Routine Cleanings
Why Professional Cleanings Are Essential
Even if you brush and floss diligently, plaque and bacteria accumulate in areas your toothbrush can’t reach. Over time, this hardens into tartar (calculus), which attaches firmly to tooth surfaces. Professional cleaning removes these deposits, helping preserve gum health, prevent decay, and maintain fresh breath.
The Cleaning Process
Our hygienist or dentist uses a combination of instruments—ultrasonic scalers, hand scalers, and polishing tools—to gently remove tartar and plaque from tooth surfaces, including areas just below the gumline. After scaling, we polish the teeth with a mildly abrasive paste to smooth the enamel and remove surface stains. We then floss and examine for any remaining roughness, providing a polished, smooth feel.
What You’ll Feel
Cleanings are generally comfortable and often painless. If you have sensitive areas, we may apply topical anesthesia or adjust technique to reduce discomfort. Mild sensitivity or gum tenderness may occur for a day or two but generally resolves quickly.
The Benefits
Cleanings reduce the risk of gum disease, prevent cavities, remove stains, refresh your mouth, and help us monitor your oral condition. They’re a key pillar of preventive care and help extend the lifespan of your teeth and dental work.
Recommended Schedule
Most patients benefit from cleanings every six months. However, if you have a history of gum disease, frequent bleeding, or a compromised immune system, we may recommend more frequent cleanings (every 3–4 months) to maintain optimal health.
