The Role of Radiographic Imaging
While visual examination is crucial, many dental issues begin below the surface—between teeth, under crowns, or within bone. X-rays allow us to see what’s hidden, giving us a more complete diagnosis and treatment planning capability.
What “Digital, Low-Dose” Means
We use digital sensors rather than traditional film, which reduces radiation exposure by up to 80–90%. Images appear instantly on-screen, and we can magnify, contrast-adjust, or compare them over time for subtle changes.
Types of X‑Rays We Use

Bitewing: Shows upper and lower back teeth and detects interproximal decay.

Periapical: Captures the full length of a tooth—from crown to root and surrounding bone.

Panoramic: Offers a wide view of both jaws, sinuses, and temporomandibular joints.

Cone-beam CT (if needed): Provides three-dimensional imaging for complex cases (implants, pathology, surgical planning).
Patient Experience & Safety
Patients wear protective lead aprons and thyroid collars. The process is quick and comfortable—often lasting just seconds per image. Because of the low-dose technology, safety concerns are minimal, even over repeated diagnostic imaging.
Why These Images Matter
X-rays help detect early decay, hidden bone loss, root infections, cysts, or abnormalities—often before symptoms appear. They also guide implant planning, root canal treatment, and prosthetic design. Keeping baseline images helps us monitor changes over time.
Frequency of Imaging
We tailor x-ray frequency to your individual needs—age, health history, caries risk, and existing conditions. For many patients, a full-scale radiograph set (e.g. bitewings) every 1–2 years and limited images as needed strikes the right balance of safety and diagnostic thoroughness.
