What Is Cosmetic Bonding?

Cosmetic bonding is a minimally invasive procedure designed to correct minor dental imperfections such as small chips, narrow gaps, stains, or irregularities in tooth shape. Instead of replacing or removing large portions of enamel, we apply a tooth-colored composite resin directly to the surface of the tooth, sculpt it, and polish it to blend naturally with your adjacent teeth.

How the Procedure Works

First, we examine your tooth and determine the ideal shade to match your existing enamel. The surface is gently prepared (etched) so the resin bonds securely. The dentist then layers the composite material, shaping it with precision. After sculpting, we cure it with a special light and polish it to a natural luster. Because this process is done entirely in one visit, it is a convenient option for many patients.

What You Can Expect

The procedure is comfortable and usually does not require full anesthesia (though we can use local numbing if needed). It’s relatively quick—typically under an hour depending on the number of teeth involved. You should be able to immediately see the improvement. There may be some mild sensitivity for a day or two, which is generally manageable with over-the-counter analgesics.

Benefits & Longevity

Bonding preserves most of your natural tooth structure, making it a more conservative option than crowns or veneers. It is cost-effective and reversible. With proper oral hygiene, occasional polishing, and avoiding excessive biting forces (e.g., opening packages with your front teeth), bonded restorations can last several years and sometimes longer.
